Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.
A full-time opportunity is available for a skilled Sign Language Interpreter to support students within a school setting. This contract role spans from now until June 5th, 2026, and involves working 35 hours per week. You’ll play an essential part in fostering communication and learning for students, with most placements involving secondary education and a primary focus on those with severe disabilities. Placement with specific age groups can be tailored to your strengths and interests.
Desired Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and exceptional interpreting skills
- Certification or licensure as required for educational interpreting in your state
- Prior experience as a Sign Language Interpreter, particularly in schools, is strongly preferred
- Understanding of the educational needs of students with significant disabilities
- Strong collaboration skills and a commitment to confidentiality and professionalism
- Flexibility to adapt communication styles for different age groups and abilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct interpreting services between students, educators, and peers to facilitate learning and participation
- Support instruction by translating classroom lectures, discussions, and activities in real time
- Adjust communication methods to suit the individual needs of each student
- Collaborate with special education teams and other professionals to create an inclusive environment
- Maintain accurate and confidential records according to school and legal guidelines
- Contribute to individualized education programs (IEPs) as needed, offering input from an interpreter’s perspective
